The North York Moors

The North York Moors National Park offers spectacular and varied scenery: from vast heather moorland and tranquil dales to ancient woodlands and a dramatic coastline. The Moors abounds in wildlife so quiet activities such as walking, cycling and horseriding are the best ways to discover them. For the more adventurous, there are opportunities for canoeing, rock climbing and sailing.

One of the most picturesques valleys of the Moors is the famous Farndale. The wild daffodils that grow along the banks of the River Dove were reputedly planted by monks many hundreds of years ago. They are protected by the Nature Conservancy Council and anyone found picking them can be fined.

There is history to be explored, too. The North York Moors stretch to the north and east of the ancient City of York; they cover a broad area up to the unspoilt Yorkshire coast and the popular seaside resorts of Whitby, Robin Hood's Bay, and Scarborough. The four market towns of Helmsley, Kirbymoorside, Malton and Pickering are steeped in tradition and have remained unspoiled through generations.
One of the most popular tourist attractions in the area is the Rievaulx Abbey, dramatic remains of the largest monastic establishment in Britain. Situated in the beautiful valley of the River Derwent, these spectacular ruins are the shell of the first Cistercian monastery in the North.
